I'm really surprised at all the subpar reviews. I don't know how to say this delicately but I think some of the other reviewers may be...kettle snobs. I moved into an apartment with a roommate that already had one of these. I've always used a kettle on the stove and was a little reluctant to give this thing a shot. Then I used it a few times and gave my kettle to GoodWill. Anyways, I have no problem opening the lid and when I push the button down it stays down, and that little screen in the spout has never fallen out. As far as the light, well I guess if you use the light as your sole assesment tool to know if it is done, then yes you may have a problem. It has never been an issue for me, and I never even thought of the light placement untill I read one of the other reviews complaining about it. I turn the thing on, run around doing other things, and when I return the water is boiling. Maybe I have some psychic link with the kettle, or maybe this thing just boils water really fast. Either way, if you are the type of person that needs to sit in the kitchen and watch that little light go off before you pour your water, you need to be able to turn it around so the light is visible--I know that may be quite a burden. Anyways, I'm very excited I found it on amazon because I want to get it for my brother for Christmas and I was about to buy him the Braun kettle.
